Indian travellers are clearly drawn to Australia’s unique landscapes, wildlife, and the multicultural vibrancy of its cities.
According to the latest survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), arrivals from India for the year ending in January 2024 reached 402,200, marking a remarkable 101% increase compared to 2019 levels. This milestone of surpassing 400,000 tourist arrivals from India is a first for Australia. Additionally, India has notably ascended to become the 5th largest inbound market for tourism in Australia in 2024, a significant leap from its position at number 7 in 2019. In January 2024 alone, Australia welcomed 26,200 visitors from India, representing 106% of pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019.
Australia’s attractiveness as a preferred destination for Indian tourists has never been stronger, bolstered by targeted marketing strategies, the streamlined and digitized visa application process, and the expanding air travel connectivity between the two countries. Furthermore, the consistent increase in visitor numbers since 2019 underscores the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between Australia, its airlines, key distribution partners, and over 5,000 Aussie Specialist Agents in India to stimulate interest and conversions.
Nishant Kashikar, Country Manager for India and Gulf at Tourism Australia, expresses, “The resurgence of Indian tourists visiting Australia reflects the resilience and recovery of international travel, particularly from one of our most important markets. It signifies the strong inclination towards travel and exploration among Indian travelers, who are attracted to Australia’s distinctive landscapes, wildlife, and the diverse cultural atmosphere of our cities.”
