Clearman’s North Woods Inn serves up wintry log cabin vibes year-round

Skiers throughout much of California might be disappointed by the lack of fresh snow this season, but in one small suburb, there’s a 66-year-old snow-themed restaurant where it’s winter every day, regardless of the weather outside.

This literal log cabin offers lunch and dinner with the company of stuffed grizzly bears, peanut shells scattered on the floor, and affordable draft beer. Clearman’s North Woods Inn, with locations in San Gabriel, Covina, and La Mirada near Los Angeles, presents itself as a casual American chophouse, but it’s truly much more than that. While they serve plentiful steaks, what sets them apart is their peaked gable roofing covered in silicone-painted stucco, meticulously maintained to resemble a snowy facade.

For generations, patrons have frequented Clearman’s North Woods Inn for its family-friendly portions, quirky decor, and the unique experience of stepping into a winter wonderland, even amidst Southern California’s scorching heat.

In the dimly lit confines of San Gabriel’s North Woods Inn, one is enveloped in a rustic ambiance reminiscent of a hunting lodge. Tiffany-style antique chandeliers, assorted taxidermy, and grand gold-framed paintings adorn the expansive space. Stained-glass windows depict wintry scenes, adding to the atmosphere of coziness and nostalgia. With a seating capacity of nearly 500 guests, the restaurant also boasts a couple of private dining areas for special events and gatherings.

The origins of Clearman’s North Woods Inn trace back to founder John Clearman’s first venture, Steak ‘n Stein, established in Pico Rivera in 1946. The inaugural North Woods Inn opened its doors in Monrovia in 1958 before relocating to San Gabriel in 1966 to accommodate the construction of the 210 freeway. Notably, the relocation of the restaurant involved the meticulous transport of its structure, log by log, at a staggering cost of $100,000 at the time, equivalent to nearly a million dollars today.

During its heyday, the North Woods Inn served as the centerpiece of Clearman’s Village, a bustling hub featuring various eateries and specialty shops. While many of these establishments have faded into obscurity over time, one enduring relic is Clearman’s Galley, a distinctive boat-shaped restaurant also owned by the Clearman family.

The North Woods Inn, nestled amidst a bustling Rosemead Boulevard alongside modern businesses, still exudes its unique charm with a snow-white facade reminiscent of a winter retreat. Despite the changing surroundings, this establishment has remained a beloved spot for families to gather, offering both an air of sophistication and a laid-back atmosphere.

For over half a century, the North Woods Inn has been a go-to destination for both casual weekday dinners and memorable celebrations, attracting patrons across generations. Wendy Alvarez, the general manager with two decades of experience in the Clearman’s restaurant group, reflects on the enduring legacy of familial patronage, a sentiment echoed by many long-time customers.

Each table is adorned with substantial copper pot-shaped menus, emphasizing the restaurant’s commitment to generous portions and accessible prices, particularly their renowned steak offerings priced between $30 to $59. The signature touch of hospitality comes with a complimentary basket of peanuts presented upon seating, accompanied by playful instructions encouraging guests to discard the shells directly onto the floor, a tradition eagerly embraced by both diners and attentive servers alike.

At Clearman’s North Woods Inn, the feast begins with two stuffed grizzly bears presiding over the scene. But that’s just the start. Each main course is accompanied by a medley of sides: lightly dressed cabbage, a salad with their signature creamy blue cheese dressing, and slices of their irresistible cheese bread, a crispy delight with a secret blend of cheese, spices, and butter.

Entrees are further complemented by rice pilaf and a massive baked potato, best enjoyed with a generous dollop of their special “cheesy butter,” a blend of whipped butter and cheese. The portions are generous, almost guaranteeing leftovers for later.

The enduring appeal of Clearman’s is attributed by Alvarez to its warm atmosphere and dedicated staff. Regular patrons have even contributed to its charm, donating decor items like the two iconic grizzly bears, lamps, and other trinkets that enhance its cozy chalet ambiance. Artificial icicles outside add to the winter retreat vibe, a welcome touch on hot days in the San Gabriel Valley.

Alvarez highlights the enduring appeal of familiar faces at the North Woods Inn, where he himself has worked for 23 years, noting that he’s not even the longest-serving employee— the previous butcher retired after an impressive 50 years of service.

This enduring connection with the community is evident as local families continue to choose the comfort of the North Woods Inn’s log walls for a variety of celebrations, from birthdays to anniversaries to retirements. And there’s potential for this tradition to extend further, as Alvarez mentions they are actively exploring new locations. With inquiries pouring in, including requests from places like Arizona, the possibility of expanding their winter-themed ambiance to unexpected locales, like a desert setting, adds an intriguing layer to their future prospects.
